......Samsun is located in the Middle Black Sea Region. Its area is 9.083 km2 and its population is 1.209.137. It is surrounded by the Ordu province to the east, by Tokat, Amasya and Çorum to the south, by Sinop to the west and by the Black Sea to the north. The sections of the Northern Anatolian Mauntains within the provincial border have hinger altitudes than those farther away from the coast which rise as round or flat hills with elevation of 1000 to 1500 meters. Its main mountains are the Canik mountains on the west, Mt. Kunduz, Mt. Bünyan, Mt. Sıralı, Mt. Yunt, and Samsun's highest mountain. Mt. Akdağ (2082 m) .Plateaus are not very high and are situated in the counties of Ladik, Havza, Vezirköprü, and Kavak.
......The fertile plains of Bafra and
Çarşamba have been formed as a result of years of accumulation of alluviums
carried by the Kızılırmak and Yeşilırmak Rivers. Samsun is rich in terms of
its streama. The Kızılırmak, the longest river entirely within the borders
of Turkey, is formed on Mt. Kızıldağ, and irrigates the lands in the Sivas,
Kayseri, Nevşehir, and Kırşehir provinces, and enters into the border of Samsun
flowing in a curve on the Anatolian plateau, and finally empties into the
sea. Its length is 1,182 km. and its main branches are Delice Creek, Çevrez
Stream, and the Gökırmak River. The second longest river, Yeşilırmak, forms
on Mt.Köse, and reaches the provincial border passing through the Canik mountains
and empties into the sea at Cape Civa. Its length is 468 km., and its main
branches are the Tozanlı River, Tokat Stream, and the Kelkit and Çekerek Creeks.
......Besides these, the Terme Creek,
the Mert River, and the Kürtün and Abdal Creeks also pass through Samsun and
empty into the Black Sea. Samsun is also rich in terms of its lakes. The coastal
and inner sections have different climates. The costal strip is under the
influence of the Black Sea, while its inner regions are under the influence
of Mt. Akdağ and Mt. Canik. In terms of precipitation and teperature, Samsun's
weather is unkline both the Easttern and Western Black Sea Regions. The precipitation
is less than in the east, and the temperature is lower than in the west, becausa
it is open to northern winds. The weather may change many times during a day.
Winters are warm in the coastal sections where its inner parts are more chilly.
The reason is the difference in altitude. Spring is foggy and chily, but summer
is arid.
